3 Useful Cover Letter Examples For Creatives

I am sharing a few cover letter examples that apply specifically to communications graduates but can be modified to work for graphic designers, videographers, writers etc. I created these cover letter examples for a module during the final year of my communications degree. The task was to develop several tailored resumes and cover letters for different industries including finance, production and the government.

What is a Cover Letter?

A cover letter is a document that accompanies your resume and should be submitted when we are applying for a creative role within an organisation.

I know from personal experience how important it is, especially when it comes to applying for a job, to make an excellent first impression. The purpose of the cover letter is to expand the information included in your resume and briefly present yourself to anyone who reads your application.

It’s beneficial to highlight some important details about your professional skill set as a creative that might go unnoticed or other personal attributes that you usually wouldn’t add to the resume.

Is there any benefit to including one?

The main benefit of adding a cover letter next to your resume is that you can give a positive impression to the human resources worker in charge of reviewing applications. Some might say that HR sees through this plan and doesn’t care if you include it or not, but adding a letter in which you describe why you’re interested in working in a specific company is always better than a “suo-so” (solo) resume.

Your cover letter should not be a copy and paste generic message that you attach to every one of your job applications. The purpose of the cover letter is to attract the attention of the employer and ultimately get called in for an interview.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am very interested in working with the marketing department in your organization. I believe that my education and employment experiences make me an ideal candidate for the position.

During my time at the University of Technology, Ja, I developed a passion for marketing and design. I have sought out multiple opportunities to build my marketing and design skills. For the last two years, I have been actively working with my faculty as Creative Director promoting different aspects of it, such as its offering, functions and other information to students. My position entailed developing and overseeing the creation of graphics in the form of flyers, banners, tickets and other assets to publicize different events. I was able to utilize my graphics skills to assist the organization in their goal to promote the program’s offerings to existing and prospective students.

As a freelancer, I have had the opportunity to broaden my skills in other areas such as album covers, logo creation, booklets, pamphlets and design for video. This experience has also allowed me the opportunity to develop my professional communication skills. I have engaged customers through calling, emailing, text messages, as well as face to face conversations. Due to my strong communication skills, clients now look to my business to create all correspondents for both print and digital media.

I believe that my experiences in marketing and my communication skills make me a prime candidate for this position. I am a diligent worker and passionate about my work. I will be an asset to your company and will use this as an opportunity to grow and further the development of my marketing skillset.

Thank you very much for considering my application for this position, and I look forward to receiving your call. I am available for an interview at your earliest convenience.

AAA Production House

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am applying for the Production Assistant position at AAA Production House. As a Communications student at the University of Technology, Ja. (UTech), I worked on numerous projects to hone my production skills in video editing, sound design and Adobe After Effects. The hands-on nature of the program helped tremendously. I can craft and edit content and get projects done on time while maintaining efficiency and quality. Given the opportunity to employ my strengths, I am thrilled to assist the AAA Production House, a company I believe produces first-rate entertainment.

As part of my program, I worked on several audio projects, such as documentaries, radio programs and several soundscapes. My recent documentary, Boss: The Face of an Entrepreneur, focuses on business owners from different areas and their stories to success. Completing this, along with the other audio projects, allowed me to learn sound design, learn different transition techniques, Adobe Audition, balance and overall, how to be a keen listener. Additionally, I work as a voice talent for several of my colleges’ projects in areas such as film and commercials.

My work with audio helped tremendously with the transition in doing video. The quality of my work improved significantly; so much, that I was selected to cover the finals of the Business Model Competition held by our School of Business Administration. As a result, I have learned a lot about angles, lighting, sound quality and mics and overall, what works in a different setting. I am also skilled at writing scripts, press releases, articles and pitch summaries. Some of the copy I have written have since been used to promote different services in my freelance work.

Thank you for your consideration and time. Attached is my resume and a link to my portfolio, which features written and production work. Please feel free to reach out to me any time for an interview.

I look forward to learning more about the company, and I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours Sincerely,

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to apply for the position of Public Relations/Public Education Officer at the Office of the Children’s Registry Jamaica.

I am an exceptionally motivated and energetic public relations professional, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication, Arts and Technology at the University of Technology, Jamaica and several years of experience of public relations work in both the non-profit sector and academic environments. Before attending college, I was contracted to work with several National Secondary Schools Committee members’ political campaigns. This role involved the preparation of several political flyers outlining what the candidates had to offer, producing videos for social media, writing speeches, attending meetings with several members of the local government and generating engagement on social media platforms.

My current experience with public relations within the University of Technology involved creating a public relations campaign for the local government’s clean-up campaign for Kingston and St. Andrew.  This campaign encapsulated press conferences, press releases, TV and Radio Tours, Hosting several events within the parish, town hall meetings and social media engagement.

Social media is rapidly replacing the traditional forms of public relations, and I believe that this would be a perfect opportunity to provide my youthfulness and knowledge with social media to the OCR. I will be able to create engagement with not only the young people in Jamaica but everyone who uses these platforms. I am a motivated person, driven to achieve positive outcomes. I have honed my written, and verbal communication skills have with four years of experience at UTech, to compete with the best of the best in Jamaica and the world. I can turn out a quality media release in a short amount of time, and I can handle short deadlines and busy environments.

As a Jamaican, the OCR has a valuable place within our society, and I would love the opportunity to use my skills to build awareness and create engagement on children rights and safety on your behalf. I have attached a resume and a copy of a plan we recently drafted in public relations class. I look forward to discussing the position with you further.

Yours Sincerely,

Thanks for taking to the time to read through these three cover letter examples I provided. I hope they proved to be useful in securing your dream job and if it did, feel free to let me know down in the comments below.

The cover letter examples I shared above are not to be straight up copypasted but is more of a guideline written by a communications student for students to use. I’m human as well, so I can’t guarantee that they are perfect. Remember always to check your writing for spelling and grammatical errors; you don’t want a nitpicky hiring manager to throw your application in the bin because of a simple typo.
